Upon your arrival at the Bangui International Airport, you will be greeted by your guide who will provide airport assistance if needed, and take you to the Ledger Plazza Hotel for check-in, refreshment, and a briefing. If you are feeling up to it, you may choose to go on a Bangui city tour in the afternoon.
This morning, we will depart from the hotel, drive through the PK 5 suburb, and head towards the Sangha Mbairé road that leads to Mbaiki, Ngotto, and ultimately to Bayanga, the headquarters of Dzanga Sangha National Park. The road is partially paved until Mbaiki, where the unpaved road begins. The drive takes about 11 hours over a distance of approximately 500 km. Points of interest along the way include the Berengo Palace, where the memorial of the late Emperor Bokassa is located, which is now a military base and not open for visiting. The L’Ile Du Buffle Rouge in Ngotto is also worth a visit to see Forest Elephants, Buffalos, Great Apes, and Hippos in the National Park. The way to Bayanga is also filled with isolated clusters of Bantu & Pygmy villages settled along the banks of the road, offering a glimpse of their cultural lifestyle. We will arrive in Dzanga Sangha in the evening and transfer to the Lodge for a well-deserved dinner and overnight stay.
After having an early breakfast, we will depart from the Lodge and embark on a one-hour forest drive to the research camp in the heart of the Dzanga Ndoki National Park, until we reach Baï Hokou, where our Gorilla safari begins. Tracking the Lowland Gorillas is an exclusive hike in the darkness of the thick rainforest, and the walk can last anywhere from 45 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the night before.
After breakfast, we will board our 4WD and drive on a bumpy track as we make our way to Dzanga Baï. After approximately half an hour of driving on a forest track, we will reach the entry point of the Bai, where we will embark on a 20-minute forest walk crossing a shallow stream (water level can reach up to the knees) as we proceed to the stilt platform erected in the middle of the forest. From this elevated watchtower, we will spend the morning observing a large number of African Forest Elephants in the Dzanga clearing, as well as numerous other species such as the rare Bongo, Sitatunga, Dwarf Buffalo, and a diverse number of birds, all interacting in their natural social lifestyles
Today we will embark on a cultural expedition to the land of the Ba’aka Pygmies, where a wide range of cultural activities to witness and experience will be available to us. We may start with a Net Hunting Expedition, a traditional hunting technique of the Ba’aka people that has been passed down from generation to generation for millennia.
We may choose to repeat the Gorilla experience or the Dzanga Baï experience, as this option is only available if your connecting flight is not for a couple of days. Otherwise, we can spend the day relaxing at the Lodge and visiting the village of Bayanga or other Ba’aka communities, or return to Bangui where we can explore the city and its surroundings. Highlights near Bangui include the Boali falls, the nearby hydraulic dam works, a boat ride on the Ubangui River or the M’poko River, and much more.
We will depart from the Lodge very early in the morning and begin our journey back to Bangui via Nola, M’BaiKi, and then Bangui. We anticipate arriving in Bangui in the late afternoon.
In preparation for your international departure, we will assist you with checking-out and any other airport assistance that you may need. Once you proceed to the waiting area, we will bid you farewell and depart. The tour ends here.
