Ashanti Craft Village
Be captivated by the legendary history and extraordinary culture of the Ashanti kingdom on this introductory tour of Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti region and Ghana’s second largest city with a population of nearly 2 million.
This region is well known for its expertise in a variety of specialist crafts. Immerse yourself in the ancient craft of weaving the colourful Kente and Adinkra fabrics that are deeply intertwined in Ashanti history. You’ll visit workshops of indigenous copperware makers, potters and batik makers.
ELmina Castle
Elmina Castle was erected by the Portuguese in 1482 as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina (St. George of the Mine Castle), also known as Castelo da Mina or simply Mina (or Feitoria da Mina), in present-day Elmina, Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast). It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, and the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara.First established as a trade settlement, the castle later became one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade. The Dutch seized the fort from the Portuguese in 1637, after an unsuccessful attempt in 1596.
Our representatives will welcome you at the Kotoka International airport upon arrival and provide airport assistance if needed. You will then be transferred to the hotel via coach. Depending on traffic, the transfer to the hotel may take between 25-45 minutes. A buffet dinner will be available at the hotel after check-in. Before ending the day, we will have a brief meeting to finalize the itinerary for the following day. »
After breakfast, we will embark on an « Accra City Tour » to get to know our host country and gain an initial impression of what makes Accra one of the most appealing cities in West Africa. Our sightseeing trip will take us to iconic landmarks such as the Independence Arch and Black Star Square, the National Museum of history where we will have a guided tour, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, and various colonial relics across the city, including the Post Office. We will also make a stop at the unique casket-making shops, the fisherman village of Jamestown and its lighthouse, and forts. From here, we will drive to La Chaumière Restaurant for lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit the Makola Market, and end our visit at the Christ Mission Orphanage and Charity Home.
After breakfast, embark on a half-day city tour of Accra, visiting the National Museum of History and Ethnography, which showcases the heritage of Ghana throughout history up to the present. The museum houses a diverse collection of Ghanaian artifacts. Then visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Park, the final resting place of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The mausoleum has been visited by many world dignitaries. Afterwards, visit the unique casket-making shops, where various designs of caskets are produced based on African beliefs of life after death. The caskets are designed to reflect the earthly profession of the deceased, with the belief that they can continue to practice this profession in the afterlife. For example, a bus driver will be buried in a bus-shaped casket, a teacher in a book-shaped casket, and a doctor in a syringe-shaped casket.
Visit the Elmina Castle, the first and oldest European structure built on African soil. This castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and later used as an auction market for slaves. Take a comprehensive guided tour of the castle, including the slave dungeons and condemned cells where slaves who attempted to escape were held. View its unique architecture before departing to Kakum National Park. Enjoy a morning walk on the « Kuntan Trail » with its numerous trees with medicinal properties. For the more adventurous, experience the « Canopy Walkway » suspended 100 feet from the forest floor for a panoramic view of the remaining vestiges of the rainforest. Afterwards, proceed to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, arriving in the late afternoon.
After breakfast at the hotel, depart for the National Cultural Centre. Next, visit several Ashanti craft villages to witness the skill and creativity of local artisans using traditional tools and techniques to produce stunning artifacts and designs that you can purchase as souvenirs for friends and family back home. Visit Ahwiaa, a village known for its woodcarving, where you can see Ashanti stools, fertility dolls, and walking sticks. Continue to Ntonso, a village that specializes in Adinkra cloth production, where you can create your own designs. Finally, visit Bonwire, where you can see the famous Kente cloth being made. Afterwards, embark on a 4-hour drive back to Accra.
After breakfast, we embark on a wildlife excursion to the Shai Hills Reserve, located in Doryumu. The 1-hour drive to the reserve offers a stunning view of the wooded and grassland landscape, home to an array of wildlife including antelopes, bushbucks, kobs, baboons, monkeys, and a diverse avian population. Next, we visit the Akosombo Dam, the second largest artificial lake in the world after China’s Three Gorges Dam. During our guided tour of the dam, we learn about the dam’s power supply and the history surrounding its construction. Depending on time, we may also make a stop at Koforidua to visit a bead factory in the heart of the Krobo identity. We return to the hotel a couple of hours prior to our departure time for Ivory Coast, marking the end of the tour.
